Voiceover in 21 languages

The car, tractor and work vehicle theory test (BW) can be taken with a voiceover in 21 languages, at every test centre. The questions and the answers stay on the screen in English; through the headphones you hear them in the language you chose.

The languages are English, Polish, Lithuanian, Russian, Romanian, Brazilian Portuguese, Pashto, Dari, Urdu, Vietnamese, Arabic, Albanian, French, Georgian, Somali, Slovak, Turkish, Spanish, Simplified Chinese, Bengali and Malayalam.

theorytest.ie offers these languages for the car test. For the motorcycle, truck, bus and CPC tests, look at the voiceover options when you book.

How to choose it

When you book at theorytest.ie you are asked whether you need a voiceover: choose your language from the list and it is saved to your booking. If you book by phone on 0818 606 106, say at the start of the call that you need a language voiceover.

The test in Irish

The motorcycle (A), car (B), truck (C) and bus (D) tests can be sat in Irish. When you book, the category names are shown in English and in Irish: choose the Irish name and the test is in Irish. The combined truck and bus test, and the bus and truck module tests, are in English only for now.

If your language is not offered

You can ask for an in-person translator, who translates the questions and the answer options and nothing more. The test is taken in a separate room at selected centres. You send a declaration form and a request form, both on theorytest.ie, and should allow up to 25 business days for the appointment.

Other support at every centre

  • An English voiceover: put on the headphones and press the speaker icon.
  • Dyslexia support, chosen when you book: the English voiceover with an on-screen lexicon of terms and alternative phrases beside each question.
  • Irish Sign Language video clips, chosen when you book, or an ISL interpreter arranged through theorytest.ie.
  • Extra time or a separate room, arranged by phone before the test.

Practising when English is not your first language

Whichever voiceover you choose, the screen is in English on the day, so practise reading the questions in English as well as listening to them. In PassDrive every question can be read aloud in English, and every answer comes with a plain explanation of why it is right.
