The road to your licence
From theory test to full licence
Five stops for a car licence. PassDrive gets you through the first; an instructor takes you through the rest.

Theory test
40 questions in 45 minutes, 35 right to pass. The certificate lasts two years.
Practise free - LStop 2
Learner permit
Apply inside those two years. L plates front and back, and someone beside you who has held a full licence for at least two years.

Six months on your permit
Your first learner permit has to be six months old before you can sit the driving test.

Driving test, then N plates
Pass, and you show N plates for two years: the 20 mg alcohol limit, and 7 penalty points take your licence.

Only an ADI can charge for lessons
Teaching someone to drive for money without being on the RSA's register is an offence. Every instructor here gave us an ADI number and we found it on the register before listing them — you can look any instructor up yourself on the RSA's register.
Car learners need 12 EDT lessons
Essential Driver Training is 12 lessons with an ADI for anyone on a first car learner permit — 6 if you qualify for reduced EDT with a licence from another country — logged in your EDT logbook. Ask whether an instructor sells it as a package.
Ask before you book
Whether the price is for 45 minutes or an hour, where they pick you up, whether they have a dual-control car in manual or automatic, and what a car for the test day costs.
You book with the instructor
PassDrive does not give lessons, take bookings or take payments. The prices and details on each listing are the instructor’s own, and the arrangement is between you and them.
